Did you know that the skin is considered an organ? Not just any organ either. It is the largest organ on our body and so it has some very specific job duties such as keeping our internal organs safe from the elements, keeps everything in place, protects the internal organs from disease and infections and acts as an indicator to health problems that may occur internally. Your skin does so much for you that you probably never think twice about and so today is your day to start treating it right.
Now that you have a clearer understanding of the important roles your skin has, its time to think about the daily toxins and exposures to the elements it is receiving. Your skin faces various elements from day to day such as the heat, cold, wind, sun, rain and pollutants. Knowing that your skin is exposed to the elements and pollutants, it should be no surprise that your skin is having moisture stolen from it. Moisture and oils that are necessary to keep it looking healthy and feeling smooth.
Your skin is made up of millions of skin cells. Every day you naturally lose thousands of dead skin cells and so the skin is constantly working to replenish the dead ones. Over time the cells get damaged and damaged skin cells is what ultimately leads to damaged skin which results in sagging of the skin and wrinkles.
Turn on the television today and you are bombarded with infomercials and commercials for skin care products that promise to erase wrinkles or get rid of acne. Although there are many great products out there that do work very well, there are many more products that do not work. Many of these products now contain herbs where even 50 years ago it wasn’t really common to find natural herbs in facial cleansers and moisturizers.
For thousands of years, people have taken care of their skin with herbal products. Take a look at the Egyptians back in 3000 BC, they were using herbs such as fenugreek and roses as an ant wrinkle measurement. Skin care products today use natural herbs that are quite effective such as Aloe Vera. Aloe Vera is commonly used in skin care products for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and immune stimulating properties.
Many people have a general idea that you should take care of your skin and they do so by occasionally lathering up with a sunscreen or washing their face with soap and water. Washing with soap and water is much to harsh on the skin. You need to use a product that is gentle enough for your face. I am not going to go over how important sunscreen use is but you should be using a daily sunscreen on your face and neck. It can be in the form of a daily moisturizer that contains SPF, a tinted moisturizer with SPF, makeup such as cover-up that uses SPF or sunscreen alone.
