<p><i>Phellinus linteus</i> is common in Southeast Asia as well as the southern United States. It grows on hardwood species of oak, mulberries and poplar, and sometimes on pines. [1]</p>
<p>Most medicinal mushroom species used today in America came to us via China or Japan. <i>Phellinus linteus</i> is a break from this trend, as it first became popular in Korea where it&#8217;s commonly used to complement traditional cancer treatment.</p>
<p>From there, the fame of <i>Phellinus linteus</i> has spread across the globe. Doctors all over the world now use it as an immune enhancer [2-11], particularly to prevent cancer metastasis. [5,10,12-17] In addition to Korea, <i>Phellinus linteus</i> is today also increasingly popular in the U.S., Japan, and the Middle East from Turkey to Israel.</p>
<p>It may have all began when a&#8217;96 Korean study reported that <i>Phellinus linteus</i> extract exhibited a broader range of immune enhancing and anti-cancer properties than the extracts from other species of medicinal mushrooms. [4]</p>
<p>Seven year later, in confirmation of the Korean finding, America&#8217;s best known mycologist Paul Stamets published a paper which compared <i>Phellinus linteus</i> to several of the most highly regarded species of medicinal mushrooms: Cordyceps, Reishi, Lion&#8217;s Mane, Chaga, Maitake and <i>Agaricus blazei</i>. [18]</p>
<p>In this study, <i>Phellinus linteus</i> turned out to have the most powerful effect on enhancing the activity of macrophages, a type of white blood cell that&#8217;s an important part of the immune system. Macrophage activity was increased 5,700% by the <i>Phellinus linteus</i> extract. The dose used was equivalent to 3,750 mg for an average (165 lbs) adult. [18]</p>
<p>It should be noted that macrophages may promote cancer growth as well as fight cancer. The research that has been published about <i>Phellinus linteus</i> extract indicates that it enhances the anti-cancer properties of macrophages. [8,14,19,20]</p>
<p>Three additional papers have been published with reports of patients using <i>Phellinus linteus</i> extract and experiencing &#8220;spontaneous&#8221; regression:</p>
<p>1. A Japanese article from 2004 reported a &#8220;dramatic remission of hormone refractory prostate cancer achieved with extract of the mushroom, <i>Phellinus linteus</i>.&#8221; [15]</p>
<p>2. Next out was a Korean article published in 2005, which reported on a patient who &#8220;ingested mushroom called <i>Phellinus linteus</i> for one and a half years&#8221; before exhibiting &#8220;spontaneous regression&#8221; of liver cancer and skull metastasis. [17]</p>
<p>3. And then one year later, in 2006, another Japanese article was published on &#8220;a case of spontaneous regression of hepatocellular carcinoma with multiple lung metastases.&#8221; The 79-year-old patient had been taking an extract of <i>Phellinus linteus</i> Mycelium for a month. When examined by his doctor 6 months later, his tumors had disappeared. [16]</p>

I&#8217;ve lost my job and I&#8217;ve had some great weight fluctuations. What started out on a bad note has ended on a positive one.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, the company I work for went out of business last year. I was left in a situation where I couldn&#8217;t find a job, so I spent most of my time online, pursuing some hobbies and looking for jobs. Unfortunately, I gained a lot of weight during this time.</p>
<p>Not knowing what to do, I realized that it had subtly happened as I snuck in some extra snacks and soft drinks each day. I decided to go cold turkey on a few things, combined with a disciplined fitness regime, and I&#8217;ve already lost half of that weight in about 60 days&#8217; time.</p>
<p>This has been great, as I&#8217;ve done it the right way without starving myself either. Here are three quick tips that I&#8217;ll give you, all of which I&#8217;ve been following.</p>
<p>The biggest thing that I did was the fact that I eliminated any and all sodas from my every day drinking habits. I don&#8217;t care if it&#8217;s a diet cola that has no calories, I still think it&#8217;s bad.</p>
<p>I think that sugar is what led to my weight gain more than anything else, so I decided to nip that in the bud. It was hard to do at first, but finding replacements for sugar like fruit makes the job a lot easier. After a few weeks, you simply won&#8217;t crave sugar like you used to.</p>
<p>Furthermore, I&#8217;m running at the gym, very regularly. It&#8217;s cold where I live now so I can&#8217;t run outside, but I take full advantage of my gym&#8217;s treadmill and run nearly every day.</p>
<p>Third, I simply don&#8217;t eat fried foods anymore. Hard to give up, but it feels great after a few weeks.</p>

<p>What&#8217;s going on? Diabetes and obesity are twin raging epidemics endangering the health and welfare of our nation&#8217;s young people. In New York City, by the age of 4, there is a one in three chance that the child will be obese. More than 40% of children are at an unhealthy weight at ages 2 and 3.1 National statistics are similar.</p>
<p>Type II diabetes, long known as &#8220;adult-onset diabetes&#8221;, is now being recognized as a significant juvenile disorder. Up to 45% of the children diagnosed with diabetes have the type II form.2 And the numbers keep increasing.</p>
<p>Type II diabetes and obesity are closely related. And being overweight is one of the two major risk factors for developing type II diabetes. The other major risk factor, not surprisingly, is lack of exercise &#8211; not being physically active.</p>
<p>Why be concerned? Both diabetes and obesity contribute to additional severe health issues. Obesity is the leading cause of pediatric high blood pressure and increases the risk of coronary heart disease. Uncontrolled diabetes, over time, can lead to heart disease, kidney disease, neurologic disorders, and blindness.</p>
<p>So we are very concerned for our children&#8217;s well-being. The good news &#8211; and it is very good news &#8211; is both conditions are lifestyle-related. Bad diet and lack of exercise cause both conditions. This is well-known. It is also well-known that maintaining a healthy diet and getting regular exercise prevents obesity and prevents or delays type II diabetes.3,4</p>
<p>As parents, it&#8217;s up to us to set the standards. If we are eating healthy, balanced meals, our kids will do the same. If we exercise regularly and keep ourselves fit and trim, our kids will exercise regularly, too.</p>
